At the last Geek Dinner, I announced that Providence Geeks would be launching a new site including discussion forums "next week", i.e. last week. Well, extenuating circumstances, including switching forum software (a big improvement!), has the project taking a little bit longer than we than anticipated. We will be up soon though, and will let you all know the moment we are. Thanks for your continued support and patience as we take Providence Geeks to the next level.

Last night's Geek Dinner 3 was another great event. Biggest crowd yet. As always, digital innovators of all stripes — engineers, entrepreneurs, educators, artists, etc.– threw back burritos and beers while discussing the finer points of creating elegant code, next-generation business models, compelling experiences, and much more.

Kipp Bradford and Brian Jepson's mini demo was a huge hit — the evening's highlight, and just the first taste of lots of "member-generated content" to come.

Jim Willis has posted photos of the event to the Providence Geeks Flickr pool. Feel free to add captions identifying particular geeks, and if you have more photos, please post them!

And she's right… Despite our unprecedented success, gentlemen, our group hasn't exactly been a "chick magnet". You don't think its our name, do you?

Mini Demo at the April 19th Geek Dinner

We’re going to try something new at the April 19 2006 Geek Dinner; a short (5-10min) talk followed by a little demo, and some Q&A. We’re calling this one “Power When You Need It”:

One thing the BlackBerry, Palm, Pocket PC, and iPod all have in common is that they are hungry for power. And with a tendency to run out just when you need to make that important phone call (or while you’re in the middle of watching a movie), it’s no wonder that lots of people invest in things like extra batteries, hand-crank chargers, and quick-charge solutions like CellBoost.

However, it’s cheap and easy to roll your own field-expedient charger that can use common power sources such a AA or C cell batteries. Kipp Bradford and Brian Jepson will present the fundamentals of your gadget power needs and show you some ways to build your own charger that can feed juice to any device that charges over a USB connection.

Wi-Pie in the sky?

The Economist’s Technology Quarterly has some good coverage of American cities that are pursuing municipal wi-fi. Since some farmers in Washington state already have wi-fi hotspots as large as Rhode Island, our state is well positioned to implement an elegant solution here. I haven’t heard anything on RI-WINS in several months. Any interest in trying to get an update on state-wide wi-fi at an upcoming geek dinner?
